About

Personal brand and portfolio site for Lawrence Sampson, a production designer and fabricator whose work for film, television, and commercials had been buried under a studio name that read like something he wasn't.

The Challenge

Lawrence had two problems working against each other. The first was the name: two decades of production design and fabrication work went out under Devilfish Films, which reads like a production company rather than the person a producer hires to design and build a set. The second was the archive. Twenty years of work lived in three disconnected places, a Google Drive folder of loose files, a long YouTube playlist, and a Vimeo profile, with much of it unlabeled and a good portion carrying camera-default filenames and no attribution at all. The live site was a single scrolling page with an image carousel and three navigation links that didn't lead anywhere, so almost none of the work was visible to anyone evaluating him.

The Solution

The Result

The clearest signal came a few days after Lawrence got CMS access: he started changing things himself. Renaming his own collections, moving categories into draft while he tightened them up, loading his own photos into the Build Before the Shot section without needing to ask. That was the whole point of building on a CMS rather than a fixed layout. A portfolio only stays current if updating it doesn't require a phone call.

He goes live at lawrencesampson.com with his own name on the site, the discipline stated in the first line a visitor reads, and twenty years of work organized so a producer can actually find it. A client portal handles the requests that still need me, and a monthly retainer covers the hosting and keeps me on call, so the site doesn't drift back into neglect the way the last one did.
